A Few Thoughts from Ed: ed pic
I sure love this time of year and I especially enjoy watching Peggy's garden taking shape and our beautiful countryside turning green with new growth. The spring/summer time is also a great opportunity for change and we are excited about the many changes within our facility as we continue to try and be the best we can be.
Deb and the staff are overflowing with ideas and thoughts on improving our products and services and are already implementing ways to improve your experience at CTS. Start looking for "one day only" flash sales that will be announced on Wed on our Facebook page.  In addition to the Flash Sales we are also introducing the Unannounced Sale.  The unannounced sales will occur without any notice.  Typically we will have a container or display positioned prominently in the store with a very aggressively reduced sale price.  The item will be available until the items in the display are sold or the time period of the sale is completed.

I can't help but get excited by the rapidly approaching Volunteer Day Facility Improvement activities and of course our 7th Annual Community Appreciation Day.   June 11th is the annual cleaning, painting and general improvement day here at CTS.
August 11th is the Community Appreciation Day and it also will see some exciting changes. The least of which has to be the fact that my staff has nominated me to be in a Dunk Tank for most of the event. Anyone who brings more than 25 lbs of food gets a chance to dunk me. Read more about this awesome day in this newsletter.
During these awesome warm months of summer we also see an increase in the long gun shooting like the AR's and Precision Rifles.  Just a reminder we have an unmatched offering of AR parts and accessories as well as the area's best selection of precision rifle products. Everything from Scopes, Kestrels, Mildot cards and all the related gear can be found in our facility. We are actively seeking your input to guide us in our attempt to complete our product offerings.
Don't forget our outdoor classes this summer. Advanced Carbine and Scoped Precision Rifle are filling fast and both classes will be an opportunity to be exposed to the most advanced training in these disciplines available anywhere in the US. The Scoped Rifle class meets WA State Criminal Justice Commission requirements for precision rifle certification.  Also this year for the first time I am teaching a combined course at the Fernan Rod and Gun Club called the 3 Guns Master Class.  Learn to run the Handgun, Rifle and Shotgun as a collective combination of defensive weapons.   See article below.

Enjoy your summer!
Be Safe...ed
Notes from Peggy:
Reminder we'll be closed on June 11th for our annual work day.
We're still looking for volunteers for our annual Work Day...see box below.  We'll feed you if you're willing to loan us your time and elbow grease....thanking you in

Center Target Sports is also closed on July 4th. Enjoy your day!

Happy Father's Day on the 17th.  Fathers shoot free on Sunday the 17th!

Save the date!  August 11th...9am-2pm....Customer Appreciation Day!  Giving away 5 guns!!!  Kids area this year...lots of freebies!  Free shooting all day.

Start looking for one day only flash sales on Wed on our Facebook page.

A reminder of our retake policy:
At Center Target Sports if you've paid for and taken a class, you can retake it again forever for free.
To sign up as a retake you MUST call to get on the list. You will be notified the day before the class if there is a seat for you.
If you are a confirmed retake 24 hours before the class and you no show for the class, you will no longer be able to retake that class for free.
Thank you to all of you that continue to support our women's shelter in Post Falls by bringing in toiletries (and blankets) and used phones.  We and they really appreciate it!

Be Safe....

Consignment Corner

Welcome to the consignment corner.  Rather than list specific guns we have in our consignment section I want to explain the accessories aspect to some consignment guns.
We are unable to display or list many of the accessories that are often included with our consignment guns.   Items such as extra magazine (sometime 7 or 8 extra mags) holsters, tools, storage containers, ammunition, etc.
All of these extras add up to the overall value of the sale.  Imagine buying a $500.00 handgun that also has with it six $60.00 mags, that's quite a savings all for $500.00.
We have developed such a great reputation with respect to our consignment firearms that many of you come in and ask about our stock every week.

  If you're interested, don't wait!

firing line More about our Prerequisite Tests
The prerequisite skills test are alive and well.  Thank you for your support and assistance in getting this process off the ground.  Our ultimate goal is to balance the student experience and make the classes as comprehensive as possible.

We have received a number of questions about taking the test without being in a class.  Of course it is our intent to offer the test for the next higher level class during the lower level or prerequisite class.  It is important for you to know that you can (with prior coordination) take the prerequisite skills test. Please be aware that you can call the range and set up an appointment with an instructor to take the skills test outside of class hours.  208-773-2331.

If you pass the test your records will be noted and you will be clear to enroll in the next level class.

Proficiency tests are now REQUIRED to enroll in Defensive HG 1 and Defensive HG 2....even if you took your class years ago.  No proficiency test is needed to retake a class you've already attended.

Hope this helps everyone understand the process.

Draw From Holster and Rapid Fire Opportunity

surelockThe next sessions are June 18, July 2, & 23, from 9am to 11am. We are going to commit two Monday mornings a month and bring in a dedicated staff member (RSO) to start.  If the demand grows we will extend the opportunities.

So this is how it is going to work.  The time allotted will be between 0900 and 1100.  Because we are bringing in a staff person during non operational hours the doors will open at 0850 and will be locked at 0900.  No one will be admitted after 0900.The shooting will be FREE to members and non-members will be charged $5.00 cash only as the registers will not be open.

If you've taken Def HG 2 or higher here at Center Target Sports and are interested in
an open shooting session to practice those skills this is the perfect opportunity to participate in this fun activity.  Shooters are reminded that CTS will not be providing any instruction during this activity and this is why all participants must be vetted by their completion of Def HG II.
Save the Date!            Save the Date!

Our 7th Annual Customer Appreciation Day
For Our Community...
August 11th,  9-2
This year's community event promises to be bigger and better than ever.  This FREE
event is all about our customers and the community.  We will give away at least 5 firearms.  We will collect food for the Post Falls Food Bank, Toys for Tots, and Blood
for the Inland Northwest Blood Bank.
With all of the bad press responsible gun owners get these days, it is nice to have a solid showing at an event benefiting worthy causes in our own community unrelated to the industry. Please help us show that OUR gun community is a caring, compassionate, responsible group of citizens!

In preparation we have already exceeded last year's number of vendors, special
activities and entertainers that will be participating to make all of Post Falls and the Shooting Community proud.
The pictures included in this article are from last year's event.  This year we're again hosting a live broadcast from K102 with morning DJ Derik Walker on site.

In our record year you may remember that in 5 hours time we collected (thanks to our shooting community) 14,500 lbs of food for the Post Falls food bank, 4 totes of toys for Toys for Tots and 96 units of blood for the blood bank.

Now is the time to set a NEW RECORD!!!

It is our goal to surpass all those totals. We promise to do our part.  We will giveaway at least 5 firearms and hundreds of other prizes.  Watch for more specific information in our special email blast coming next month.
Again this year instead of one ticket per food item we're giving one ticket for each pound of food you bring or for each toy.  Each ticket is a chance to win a gun or one of hundreds of other prizes.  No need to be present to win the guns.

This year we will be giving away prizes every half hour from the tickets in the boxes.

We are also working on printing your tickets with your name and phone number if you bring more than 25 pounds of food.  No more writing your names over and over and over!

We're also looking at a special drawing for those that bring over 100 pounds of food...stay tuned for more info on those prizes.

3 Bloodmobiles again this year.....

Comprehensive Handgun (4 days)
June 12-15

So many of you have said that 5 days off of work was too much.  So we have consolidated the course to 4 days.

We have not cut anything out of the class.  I have just adjusted the presentation.  I have learned a lot about this class since I wrote it many years ago and this new format will allow me to adjust accordingly.

We will still see improvements like in the pic to the right.  The target on the left is Student A on day one and the target on the right is the same student Day 4.

Register early as this class will fill.

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip
If I Had To Pick Just One
We are blessed to live in this great country and live under the protection of the 2nd Amendment. But what if for some reason I needed to reduce my gun collection down to one gun? What a troubling question. Troubling for many reasons but that said, not a difficult question for me to answer. Of course I realize that my answer is not universal or even appropriate for every situation. But I'll attempt to provide some insight as to how I came about this conclusion. Keep in mind that at forefront to all my choices is the desire to have a versatile system.

For Me...The Shotgun. That's the one firearm I would keep under any circumstances. The versatility of this firearm can't be matched. Think about it in these terms, I can hunt Big Game, Small Game, Game Birds, Varmints, and defend against both Four Legged and Two legged Predators. An additional use that could come in handy is the shotgun's ability to open locked doors and address multiple moving targets. Yes there are limitations such as (range) distance to target, ammunition types, sighting systems, and skill levels.

All things considered, owning and understanding the shotgun is deserving of your consideration. Whenever the shotgun discussion comes up it most often is about the Gauge. 12 Gauge vs. 20 Gauge or how long the barrel should be. Occasionally you will hear a heated debate as to pump, semi or break configuration. But don't be so short sighted with regard to understanding the shotgun.

We will save the Gauge discussion for the end of the article. My thoughts on gauge may surprise some of you.
Let's first look at the shotgun's functional configuration. Shotguns used in shooting sports like Sporting Clays, Skeet or Trap are most often break guns (hinged style over & under) or semi-auto. Water fowl hunters are moving towards the semi-auto and defensive minded shooters are split between the pump and the semi-auto style.

Each functional configuration has pro's and con's. My choice is the pump shotgun. The mechanical function is simple in design and most dependent on the operator for reliable function. Less moving parts and my level of operational control make this system a winner in my mind. Because I am the power behind the firing cycle I am less concerned about gummy, dirty, dry or frozen actions. Less dependence on powder load variations allows me to be less picky when it comes to ammo selection.

The next area to analyze is barrel length, stock type and sighting system. Here again my choices are based a multi-purpose solution. Barrel length for me would be in the 18.5" range. I like the maneuverability it affords me in the urban and (in house) environment. With the 18.5" barrel I do not lose any significant range and I am still very capable of reaching out with a 1 oz slug to distances beyond 100 yards. The 18.5" barrel allows me to hunt wild game in any capacity I need.

As for the Stock configuration, I see more and more pistol grip versions in my classes. They also are the most difficult for beginner and intermediate shooters to control. In many places they have earned the nickname "nose buster". I am not a big fan of the pistol grip version unless the shooter is very experienced.
I do like the ghost ring type sights on my shotguns used for defense. We all know that we point shotguns. We only aim a shotgun when we are using single projectiles (Slugs). The ghost ring sights are a real advantage in this case. As for optics, we see all types of red dots and holographic versions but these tend to hinder any type of shooting other than defensive.

Ok, we have put it off long enough. Let's discuss Gauge. The most common gauge used in defense is by far the 12 Gauge. This does not mean that we all need to be shooting 12 gauge shotguns. If you are comfortable with a 12 gauge then by all means consider the 12 gauge. However, the smaller gauges are very capable. Let me jump right into the 410. Obviously if the 410 is capable then the intermediate gauges are as well.

One of my favorite gauges is the 410. I am not talking about your grandfathers squirrel gun. When it comes to the 410 I am a huge fan of the Mossberg 410 Home Defense Shotgun. This shotgun was designed from the very beginning to serve as the ultimate home defense weapon. The two features that really stand out are the forend vertical grip and the muzzle compensator. The vertical grip is invaluable when it comes to weapons retention. The shooter has a much more secure grip which makes it much more difficult for someone to take it away. The compensator is designed to spread the pattern for optimum performance in the home defense environment. The size, weight, balance and lack of aggressive recoil also make this shotgun a winner for every member of the household.

The discussion always turns to the small 410 not being effective for defense. This is simply not true! This is a very capable firearm when loaded with defensive ammo. In fact, in our advanced shotgun class we breech doors (blow off door locks and door hinges). Yes, you guessed it; we do this with the 410 as well.

Don't hesitate to consider the Mossberg 410 home defense shotgun. Many of you know their popularity led to back orders in excess of 9 months for these shotguns. We have adjusted our stockage levels so this will not happen again.
