A Few Thoughts from Ed:
May is already here.  It seems like the older I get the faster the seasons change.  This is known as the "Honey Do List" period in the Santos household.  I have gotten a jump on the list this year and Peggy's garden is tilled so that's a big one off the list.
As many of you know, I have fallen in love with photography. Both wildlife and landscapes seem to be my passion and I have a special (not yet fully understood) desire to create Black and White prints.  I am soliciting your help with a project I want to begin this summer.

I want to shoot (with a camera) as many abandoned and discarded scenes as I can.  My goal is to try to create some artful images of places and items that have been discarded. If you are aware of any old buildings, barns, cars, boats, farms, homes or anything that might fit into this category, please email me [email protected]

Our rental counter selection continues to grow along with the demand for our "Try Before You Buy" policy.  Deb is constantly trying to update the rental gun offerings.  We anticipate the demand to grow because of some of the new laws in Washington.  If the new law takes effect as is planned, a WA resident will need to go through an LE check every time they desire to rent a gun in the state of WA. I believe a number of WA residents will just cross the border to "Try before you Buy"with us.  More on that as we approach the start date for the new laws. Be sure to check out the gun rental counter next time you're in. Remember, members get gun rentals for free!
If you have younger shooters in your family we have "Ian's" platform available for you to use. The platform was inspired by a young man named Ian who is tall enough for our range but a bit too short to shoot over the shooter's bench. I built the platform so younger shooters will have a safe and stable place to enjoy the experience of shooting. Just ask one of our employees to help you move it into your stall if you have a youngster who needs a little extra height.
We are excited to offer an additional summer program focused specifically on our youth shooters.  Please see below the article about our KID'S HOT SHOTS Program
We are especially proud of Larry and Rod who just completed another step in their Instructor careers.  They recently completed the NRA instructor certification.    These dedicated instructors are always looking for new ways to pass along the safe shooting  message to our students.
Also in support of our training we are starting to get a handle on the new simulator we recently purchased.  Some of you have experienced a bit of interaction with the system.  Look for us to add the simulator to a number of our classes.
A Word About Our Classes fs class rm
First of all, You may have noticed the transition to a new format to our class flyers.  We will soon have all the flyers available in the new format.  The hope is this new design will make it easier to understand the class which will assist you in making the best choice for your next class.
As you know our classes are just about 100% sold out every month .  We understand the wait for a class date can be frustrating and we are working to alleviate this as much as possible.  We have added classes to every day the range was available.  We have cancelled 90% of our LE range contracts and now offer the range to LE on a daily basis only when available.  This will give our members and our training programs priority.
Why are our classes so popular?   I believe the reasons are many.  Allow me to share what so many of you have told us.  I know there are many places to train in our area.  As you know I have always encouraged students to take quality training at every opportunity.  I believe we are all the products of our experiences and a diversity of QUALITY training makes us all better.
The selfish benefit to me is that taking these other classes (some local and some hundreds of miles away)  confirms in the student's mind just how good our training really is.  So often I have heard, " It was a good class, but no better than Center Target Sports and you are a lot cheaper and I don't have to travel!"
I believe the fact that we allow you to repeat any class previously completed forever for free speaks volumes.  I know of no better way to prove our commitment to your training, subject understanding, and task performance.  Let's not forget the additional benefit of having my services in the courtroom for free, God forbid you ever need them, if you take your CCW class from us.
Do we hold you to a higher training standard? You bet we do.  I remember 14+ years ago a number of local instructors laughed at the thought of me requiring CCW students to shoot a qualification course and sit in class for 7 hours.  Many laughed because we were the first to bring the Utah CCW program to Eastern Washington, North Idaho and Western Montana.  We feel more committed to the higher standard of training we offer now more than ever due in no small part to the over 25,000 students that have completed our training.
Thank you for supporting us and thank you for your patience in waiting for a class date.  I can assure you it will be worth the wait.  Don't believe me... Compare our programs to anyone else anywhere in the country and see for yourself.

Special Thanks.

Many media outlets in our area profess their support for our community.  I'm not sure about some of them when it comes to really putting their money where their mouth is.

However K102  Specifically the Morning Show with Derik and Jeff are the real deal.  These guys and their radio station are always ready to support this community.  They deserve our support.

Please take the time to spread the word about how great these guys really are.
Save the Dates!

Consignment Corner

Welcome to the consignment corner.  Remember many of the consignment guns have additional accessories.
We are unable to display or list many of the accessories that are often included with our consignment guns.   Items such as extra magazine (sometime 7 or 8 extra mags) holsters, tools, storage containers, ammunition, etc.
All of these extras add up to the overall value of the sale.  Imagine buying a $500.00 handgun that also has with it six $60.00 mags, that's quite a savings all for $500.00.
We have a great selection of Consignment Long Guns at this time.  Too many to list individually.  Please see the picture below:
You might find the below listed handguns of special interest!

How to have productive practice

rail vise
Gunsmith Corner
Should I buy my gun oil by the quart?
Now I know I will get some dissent from both sides but I think it's time to set some guidelines in the firearms lubrication field. First let's all agree that materials used for firearms have changed greatly in the last thirty years. Also that we are light years away from old brands of gun oil and " 3 in 1" or other "light" machine oil. Modern materials and designs don't require the same levels of lubrication that my grand dads 1873 and 1911 colts did. Nor do modern sporting rifles respond well to swimming in oil like an old Mauser or Garand.
My current practice, it has evolved over time, is the judiciousapplication of modern CLP type oils and even more judicious use of heavier grease type lubricants. The big reason for using CLP's has to do with the physical and chemical properties that allow less oil to do more work for a longer period of time. CLP's tend to stay on the surface longer and have higher levels of lubricity than older oils of similar viscosity. They also don't seem to carbonize as much from heat or gum up in the cold. The reason I say judicious use is that too much oil can actually stop striker fired weapons from firing. It can accumulate in the striker sleeve effectively forming a hydraulic ram that prevents the striker from moving forward into the primer with sufficient force to ignite it.
When we look at grease it is important to note that excess grease is a magnet for dust and grime. Dust and grime act like abrasives causing excessive wear on your metal and polymer surfaces. Grease works best in high movement areas such as the AR15 bolt carrier or the 1911 slide rails. I have worked on more than a few firearms that the only thing wrong was excessive oil or grease build up causing the actions to fail. Finally a word about WD40. If you have ever fried fish you know what kind of gunk cooked on fish oil produces, not something I want in my gun. While great for hinges and lug nuts not so great in firearms.
Keep your rifle at the ready, shoot straight and shoot often.

Classes Now Registering!

Tactical Pistol (2 days) - May 25-26

fof This is the most advanced pistol class taught anywhere in the region.  This is a two day class that requires students to conduct live fire exercises as well as Use of Force scenarios held in our tactical bay using our shoot house modular walls and halls system.
This modular system allows us to create hallways and doorways along with corners that must be negotiated by the students.  Each student will participate in scripted exercises that may require any level of response from less lethal to deadly force.
I know this all sounds good but you must have completed
Defensive Handgun 2 in order to enroll in this class.

Basic Carbine scheduled May 19th
Basic carbine is the class that teaches the proper manipulation and function of the carbine for defense.  This is an 6 hour course limited to 10 students. This course is designed to introduce students to the rifle and develop safe essential rifle skills. You will learn the short and medium range applications which are encountered by Law Enforcement/Military personnel in an urban/rural environment.

This course covers: ammunition selection, ballistics, loading, unloading and malfunctions, positions and aiming, marksmanship fundamentals, cover and concealment.

Advanced Carbine - July 27 at Fernan Outdoor Range ed carbine
Don't miss the most comprehensive Carbine class offered in the Northwest.  This is a newly modified version of our very popular course.  We will offer this advanced program this summer on June 23 at Fernan Rod and Gun Club Outdoor range.   We are blessed to have such an awesome facility available to us here in North Idaho.
This class is less than 1 hr of classroom and approximately 7 hrs of shooting on the range. We will pick up where we left off at the end of Basic Carbine and move into a comprehensive format covering carbine and also handgun transitions.
Please make sure you check out the list of required equipment prior to registering for this class.
All students must have completed the CTS Basic Carbine class.

This class is based on fact and science as well as testing by men and woman a lot smarter than me. John Farnam Is Returning to CTS

November 22, 23rd and 24th
There have been a handful of instructors in the gun culture whom have made a dramatic impact on realistic defensive firearms training.  The greats like Rex Applegate, Col. Cooper,  Ray Chapman, Massad Ayoob, John Farnam, have long left their mark on realistic defensive use of the handgun.  These men have always been focused on the student and the realistic principles of ones defense.

Many of the instructor who travel the country today offering the latest and greatest are actually teaching techniques and tactics developed by these men 50 years ago in some cases.  The reality is the basic firearm fundamentals and the foundational manipulations associated with the fundamental application of the handgun have not changed much over the years.

I would highly recommend you take the time to experience the instruction of John Farnam.  He has been a mentor of mine for many years.  I am proud to call him my friend and encourage all students who are serious about quality realistic self defense techniques with a firearm to see for yourself when John is here.  This class will start on Friday evening and then continue all day Saturday and Sunday.

On a side note:  We do not profit from John's class.  You pay him directly all the money stays with him.  This is obviously a class that does not fall under our repeat for free policy.

You can register for John's class on his website:

Ever want to shoot a Machine Gun?

We teach our civilians to the same level we teach armed professionals.  These skills are very perishable.  Recognizing the importance of repetition I have always believed that it is only fair to allow students to retake a class for FREE.  In my opinion it is the only appropriate policy if the teacher is truly concerned with the students ability to retain the information and techniques.  Please take advantage of our retake policy...we implemented it when we opened our doors in 2004 especially for you.  It is just another way of putting our money where our mouth is with regards to realistic comprehensive training.

Basic Carbine retakes only - June 30

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip
Diagnostics To Some Common Shooting Errors

Most of the shooting errors I see at the range are a failure to properly apply the two most important shooting fundamentals: sight alignment and trigger press. However, other factors may also cause a shooter to have problems in properly delivering a shot to the target.  The shooting situations listed below assume that the handgun and ammunition are functioning correctly, that the handgun sights are adjusted properly and that the shooter is right-handed. The shot groups for a left handed shooter will appear on the opposite side from the shot groups as described here.  Here are some possible causes to your misses if you are aiming for the center of the target but, are producing hits in the specific quadrants called out below.

SHOTS in Lower Left Quadrant: This pattern is caused when the shooter jerks the trigger, causing the front-sight to dip low and to the left before the bullet leaves the barrel. To correct this type of error, the trigger must be slowly pressed until the shot fires, being careful while pressing not to disturb the sight alignment and sight-picture.

SHOTS in 9 o'clock position: This pattern is created when the shooter does not properly place the index finger on the trigger. In such cases, the shooter has a tendency to press the trigger at an angle instead of straight to the rear. This improper press causes the muzzle to shift to the left, with the shots striking in the 8:30 to 9:30 zone.

SHOTS in Upper Left Quadrant: This is caused by 'riding the recoil'. This is where the shooter anticipates the recoil and makes the handgun recoil before it really happens. This type of pattern can also be caused by improper follow-through. The shooter releases the trigger finger too soon and may flip the finger forward, causing the front-sight to rise to the left. Errors of this nature will usually produce shots in the 9:30 to 12 o'clock zone.

SHOTS in Upper Right Quadrant:  Here the shooter has 'heeled' the shots high on the target. This error is caused by anticipating the shot and, at the last moment before firing, giving the handgun a slight push with the heel of the hand. The front-sight moves up to the right and the bullets strike the target in the 1 o'clock to 2:30 zone.

SHOTS in the 3 o'clock position: Here the shooter 'thumbs' the handgun. Just as the shot begins, the shooter pushes the right thumb against the side of the frame, causing the aligned sights to move to the right.

SHOTS in the Lower Right Quadrant: This target illustrates what happens when a shooter's grip tightens as the trigger is pressed. This target area is known as the 'lobster' area - just as a lobster's claw clamps together, the shooter's hand clamps or snatches at the last second. This movement causes the front-sight to dip low and to the right, pushing the shots to the 3:30 to 5 o'clock zone.

SHOTS directly below the point of aim:  The shot string in the 5 o'clock to 6:30 area is caused when the shooter 'breaks' the wrist - another form of anticipation. The shooter expects the handgun to recoil at a known instant and tries to fight or control this anticipated recoil by cocking the wrist downward. The shooter may subconsciously believe that the recoil can be lessened by holding the wrist down. This shot group can also be caused by a shooter who relaxes too soon.

SHOTS everywhere - No distinct pattern:  A peppered target is often produced by a beginning shooter. A new shooter usually does not consistently repeat one particular error, but instead commits many different errors. The result is a target with shots scattered in many places. Such a target may be caused by the shooter's inconsistency, including changing the grip between shots, focusing on the target instead of the front-sight on some shots, failing to align the sights properly and so on.
