A Few Words From Ed
Welcome back to our monthly newsletter. I hope you continue to realize some benefit in what we have to say in this monthly email. I am always looking for subjects to write about so if you have any ideas...send them in please.
We are increasing our class offerings this winter and the classes are already filling up. As always you can repeat any class completed forever for free. Our Idaho enhanced CCW class continues to sell out and we will increase the number of CCW classes per month as we enter our busy season. We are also hoping to offer a few new exciting classes this winter.....

I know Archery hunters are in full preparation mode if not already in the field. However, this is the time for rifle hunters to check their equipment. If you have any doubt about your rifle or just want it checked out by a professional, Clint our gunsmith, is your man. Get that rifle in ASAP before opening day is here and you can't trust your rifle.

A quick word on gunsmithing. We are investing a lot of time, energy and money in building up the gunsmith area of our business. Clint is putting systems in place and we are adding more equipment to the shop each month. We are committed to offering the best in gunsmith services to our customers and this region. The next time you have a firearm that needs modification, tuning, repair or a thorough cleaning/ inspection bring it to Clint.

Deb continues to work tirelessly in her efforts to obtain the hard to get high demand firearms. It is exciting to us to see these firearms on the shelf and to see you take advantage of her efforts.

Speaking of high demand handguns, Deb has scored a few Ruger Max 9's. We are currently offering a special deal on them until September 15th. The Ruger® MAX-9 Semi-Auto Pistol is the ultimate concealed-carry, striker-fired pistol, complete with a rugged, yet lightweight frame, textured grip, and a tritium fiber optic sight with a drift-adjustable rear sight.

The slim, lightweight frame ensures minimal printing and deep concealment, while still providing an impressive capacity with 2 E-nickel PTFE®-coated magazines. The hardened alloy steel slide is fitted to a precision-machined fire control chassis and a glass-reinforced nylon frame. The medium textured grip offers a comfortable, non-slip grip, and the smooth trigger offers a consistent, clean break and a positive reset. The tritium fiber optic day/night front sight, and the drift-adjustable rear sight deliver intuitive target acquisition in any lighting, while the optics-ready slide cut readily accepts JPoint™ and Shield-pattern micro red dot sights.

The cold hammer-forged, 3.2" barrel is finished with a durable black oxide finish for superior corrosion resistance. Also features an external manual safety, and a loaded chamber indicator, coupled with an integrated trigger safety, and internal striker blocker that offer enhanced safety and help protect against accidental discharges.
We also have complete AR Armorer's Kits in stock now.
Enjoy our beautiful fall season!
Be Safe...ed

Notes from Peggy:
Remember, students receive a 10% discount when you sign up for another class on class day…limited to classes on schedule.

If you're getting unwanted "interested in" emails from us, please let us know and we'll take you off the list. Just reply to any email from us saying "take me off this list" and we'll do it instantly.

If the website shows a class is full, sometimes it has 1 or 2 spaces still available. We short the website because there is a lag time in getting those registrations and we do not want to overbook the class. You can call the range and check if the class is indeed full. Also, we find last minute cancellations happen. So if you see a class date that works for you, put it on your schedule and give us a call 1 or 2 days prior to the class. You may find that there is a last minute opening.

A reminder that retakes need to call in to the range to sign up. The website does NOT recognize a retake nor does it recognize class credit...please call us.

Yes, we are still taking toiletries and phone donations for the women's shelter. Thank you to all of you who give.

We are happy to announce that we are now renting .22LR and .40S&W firearms!

Thanks for understanding. We'll continue to rent while supplies last.
ID Enchanced CCW Requirement Updates

Renewing your CCW - You do not need to retake a class. Application needs to be filled out with $30 fee. Application can be found on Kootenai County Sheriff Dept website.

Expired CCW - within 6 months, same as renewing. After 6 months if you took our class, must retake the LE portion of the class, then fill out application with $40 fee. (This may vary by county due to COVID restrictions).

Lost paperwork - If you took our class within the last year and lost your paperwork before applying, you must retake the LE portion of our class.

To retake the LE portion of a CTS class, please call to reserve a seat. 208-773-2331.

Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe - Who's the Instructor Today?
We are very proud of our instructors and especially proud of the fact that we have developed all our instructors from within the CTS team. We have always avoided hiring an outside instructor in an effort to ensure our unique course content and method of presentation was consistent.

We are constantly mixing instructors with classes to provide our students with exposure to multiple instructors and presentation methods. This is the best approach for a student to get critical feedback and achieve a higher level of understanding of the material.

Recently we experienced an issue that concerns me. We had a student show up as a retake, only to leave when they realized a particular instructor was not teaching that particular session. We offer retakes for free as an opportunity for the student to learn and the slots are in high demand.

When a class is scheduled and a student drops out because of who the instructor is they have deprived another student from a slot that now goes unfilled.

Please be aware moving forward, if you leave a class for this reason, to us it is the same as a no-show and therefore you will lose the ability to repeat the class for free until you pay to take it again.

Please take a moment to investigate the many ways the Mantis-X training system can dramatically impact your shooting ability (pun intended). We are very excited to be the newest Mantis-X dealer. See below just how easy it is to operate and look at all the info you can receive when using the system.

You just need to:

Connect MantisX to the accessory rail of any firearm, just like you would any other firearm attachment. Works with live fire, dry fire, airsoft, and CO2.
Install the smartphone application, turn on MantisX, and pair the device with a phone via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE or Bluetooth 4.0).
Evaluate shooting performance, identify areas of improvement, and track progress over time

Track the movement of your handgun’s barrel during the trigger pull. Shots are grouped according to movement pattern similarity.
Track score of each shot individually. Analyze trends.
Blue: hold/sighting. Yellow: trigger pull. Red: Shot breaking and recoil pattern.
Bravo Concealment Holsters

The TORSION Gun Holster. A Breakthrough In IWB

With it’s patented Torsion TechnologyTM the high-quality Torsion is the BEST IWB holster. Its radical design allows the handgun to be twisted inward towards the body for maximum concealment. The inward 5-degree cant or twist of the handgun conceals the grip of the gun achieving the ultimate in concealed carry without the use of any external attachments.

These belt clips allow for adjustable ride heights and for deep concealment whether you run appendix carry or anywhere else along your waistline. This makes the Torsion simple yet highly effective. Adjustable retention is found in our 3.0 line of holsters.
Finally Our Gun Inventory Is Growing

We have been lucky enough to pick up a few very high demand handguns, the all new S&W M&P 9 Shield Plus, Ruger Max 9 and S&W .380 EZ shields.

Between Sept 1 through the 15th, we will give one box of ammo with the purchase of any Ruger Max 9 or S&W M&P .380 EZ Shields.

Limited to supplies on hand!

We ordered from S&W back in February and it finally arrived! A S&W custom Performance Center AR rifle. It will not last long as it will go first come first served.

Please don't call us about specific guns as our stock changes every day.

Comprehensive Handgun (4 days)
October 12-15

So many of you have said that 5 days off of work was too much. So we have consolidated the course to 4 days.

We have not cut anything out of the class. I have just adjusted the presentation. I have learned a lot about this class since I wrote it many years ago and this new format will allow me to adjust accordingly. This class is for everyone except the true beginner.

We will still see improvements like in the pic to the right. The target on the left is Student A on day one and the target on the right is the same student Day 4.

Register early as this class will fill.

CTS will NOT be supplying ammo for this course. The student must bring all 1500 rds.

Gunsmith Corner
I usually discuss gunsmith repair and service issues in this email section. However, please let me share with you a recent visit to an outdoor range and my performance with my rifle that day.

Monday was my day off and since my wife was working I gathered three rifles and journeyed to the Shoshone County Shooting Range. Located just outside Smelterville, it is an outdoor facility geared to firearms enthusiasts. It is a well-developed facility and they continue to improve.

There are boxes provided for donations and brass if you don’t want to carry it home. These provide financial support for the range. Travel from Coeur d’Alene takes about 25 minutes.

While the range has designated rifle and pistol areas I shot only on the rifle range which is equipped with a warning light for safety when there are persons down range. It is turned on by agreement of the shooters on the line and turned off by the last person back from down range. There is not a full time range officer on duty. This is a free public range with ten concrete benches under a substantial cover. Target boards are available at 25, 50, 100 and 200 yards. The firing line is elevated to provide a clear view of the target field. There are steel gongs out to 550 yards on the hillside. They are among the trees and offer a significant challenge without being overly difficult. I did not climb the hill to measure but the smallest plate appeared to be roughly 6” in diameter. If you are looking for a different range experience I can recommend this range.
I had a good day at the range putting the final zero on three rifles I might use this hunting season. That job completed, after several walks down range to replace targets, I turned my attention to the long range gongs. I can state with certainty that I have been slacking on my rifle training. I still have the basics down but making hits on the 550 yard gongs was a challenge. I averaged less than fifty percent hits with only one three shot string of hits on a large gong with my Winchester model 70 coyote in 243. The 6-24x50 Vortex scope provided excellent visibility, and very consistent hold adjustments with the EBR-2 reticle in the first focal plane. My customized 308 wore a Bushnell Elite 6-18x50 with a good moa reticle. I was shooting 168 Federal Gold medal match ammo. The wind was twisting and gusting as the range is in a narrowing valley setting. I found the range compensation far easier than the windage adjustments.
The whole point of this story is to say that skills do not remain constant without proper practice. I am a well versed precision shooter trained on the high deserts of Wyoming and in the Army. I used to compete regularly though I won’t be found in the record books. The thing is that my skill level has degraded in the last fifteen years due to my lack of practice. Please don’t fall into the “because I could I still can trap”. Shooting of any disciple requires practice. I’ll be spending more Mondays on outdoor ranges before I go hunting this fall.

Shoot safe, shoot often.

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip

So-called “point shooting,” “instinctive firing,” and other combat handgun aiming techniques are often misunderstood or misinterpreted. So that we are all on the same sheet of music, I am referring to handgun shooting techniques that you are not consciously acquiring the sights of the handgun at the moment of firing. They can be termed as un-sighted as they do not intentionally make use of the sights of the pistol, at least in terms of focus. These techniques may in fact have the sights positioned at eye level between the shooter’s dominant or master eye and the intended target, though. You could also use the term mid-sequence as this refers to any handgun firing technique or position of the weapon upon discharge where:
  • The handgun was either not up to the firer’s line of sight, or
  • Was brought up to the line of sight, but did not receive focus on the sights, or
  • Where the weapon was not at full arm extension, or
  • Was performed at some point during a natural draw stroke, or
  • Where the discharge occurred in anything but a conventional weaver or isosceles.
This is a listing of some of the prevalent techniques related to un-sighted and mid-sequence shooting.
  • Point shooting
  • Instinctive shooting
  • Hip shooting
  • Retention shooting
  • Speed rock
  • Hip thrust
  • Full thrust
  • Applegate Technique
  • Israeli Instinctive Shooting Technique
  • CQB Shooting Technique
  • Cirillo Technique
  • Close-Hold Technique
  • Target focus
Components of the un-sighted shot or mid-sequence engagement:
  • Having the handgun in the field of view or cone of vision
  • Ideally, having the handgun (and thus the sights) up to the line of sight
  • Having a DYNAMIC grip and bore alignment with the shooter’s forearm, with the axis of the bore parallel to the forearm, especially in the case of one-handed shooting
  • Even rearward pressure on the trigger, with the uptake of trigger slack continuous on the draw stroke and throughout the extension, where the shot breaks right at the moment of full extension of the handgun to where it is aligned on the target
  • Eyes focused on the target, preferably on a pinpoint object or other part of the opponent in the vital area, synchronized with the trigger press, giving a finite point by which to ensure hand-eye coordination
  • Firing the gun in one motion, with one set of synchronized muscular contractions
  • Do not shove the gun, as this may cause jerking or bucking of the gun
  • Lock the wrist
  • Lock the elbow(s) if possible
  • Don’t limit all firing to one un-sighted or mid-draw positions. The shooter may be able to engage with the first or a few follow-up shots, then attempt to finish firing at a more stable or sighted position
With any shooting where the handgun is not within the line-of-sight to the target, the shooter will need to establish muscle memory and subconscious memory to ensure that the technique will work under stress. Those of you that have taken my defensive level classes have experienced this reality when I covered your sights with black tape. With your sights taken away by the tape you soon realized the importance of the dynamic grip.
